It all began at Ipswich Town’s academy. I grew up in Macclesfield, Cheshire, and joined Ipswich at a young age. I was fortunate enough to win the club’s Young Player of the Year award in the 2006–07 season, which gave me the confidence to push on. Signing a professional contract in 2007 was a huge moment for me.
Ipswich was like home for me. I had so many memorable moments there, but one that stands out is scoring my first professional goal against Middlesbrough in 2010. It was a great feeling to contribute like that. Also, forming a solid defensive partnership with Christophe Berra in the 2013–14 season was another highlight. We had a strong campaign that year, finishing 6th and making the playoffs.
Injuries are always tough. I had my fair share, from breaking my ankle early on to dealing with back issues later in my career. The hardest part is the mental challenge—staying positive, working hard in rehab, and trusting the process. I was lucky to have good support systems in place, both at Ipswich and with my family.
The style of play in the MLS is different—more physical, less tactical in some ways, but the league has grown a lot since then. I loved my time in Colorado. Scoring my first goal for the club and being involved in memorable matches like our win over Minnesota United in 2018 were some real highlights.
Every league has its style, and it’s all about adapting. In England, the Championship is fast-paced and physically demanding. In the MLS, you travel long distances, so there’s the challenge of managing fatigue. But as a player, you learn to adjust your game and stay versatile. Whether it’s playing as a centre-back or filling in as a left-back, I’ve always tried to be adaptable.
After my time at Colchester and a short spell at Milton Keynes Dons, I felt it was time for a new challenge. The opportunity to join Macarthur FC in Australia came up, and it felt like a great move. The A-League is competitive, and I’ve always wanted to play in different environments. Joining Auckland FC has been another exciting step, especially being part of a new club with big ambitions.
I lived in New Zealand during my youth, and it’s always felt like a second home to me. When the opportunity came to play for the All-Whites, it was something I couldn’t pass up. Representing New Zealand at the 2010 FIFA World Cup was a dream come true. We didn’t lose a game in the tournament, and to be part of that history is something I’ll always cherish.
I was just 22 when I captained the team against El Salvador in 2012. Wearing the armband and leading the team out was something I’ll never forget. Scoring my first goal for New Zealand not long after, in a World Cup qualifier against Fiji, was another proud moment.
With Auckland FC, I’m excited to help build something special. The club has a lot of potential, and I’m here to contribute however I can. Internationally, I’d love to keep representing New Zealand and help the team qualify for more major tournaments. There’s always more to achieve.
