Auckland FC has confirmed the departure of Codey Phoenix, with the reserves captain off to America to play for Washington-based Tacoma Defiance.
The Defiance are the reserve team of Seattle Sounders FC and compete in the MLS Next Pro, a league in the third tier of the United States soccer league.
This move provides Phoenix with an opportunity to continue his development in a new environment, whilst the agreement between the clubs also ensures that Auckland FC will benefit should the player progress and achieve future milestones.
“The agreement we’ve reached reflects the club’s ongoing commitment to developing players while securing long-term value from our football pathways,” says Terry McFlynn, director of football at Auckland FC.
“Codey has enjoyed a very successful Dettol National League season, and I know everyone at the club is keen to express their thanks for his efforts during his time with Auckland FC.”
Originally born in Chester, England, Phoenix played 16 times and scored three goals as Auckland FC Reserves finished fourth in the Dettol National League, only three points off the top spot. He also featured for the All Whites in the 2025 U-20 World Cup in Chile.
“We’ll be sad to see him go. He’s contributed greatly to the team both as player and captain, but this represents an awesome opportunity for him to continue his journey and play football in a new country and a new professional environment,” says Auckland FC Reserves head coach, Luke Casserly.
“One of the founding principles of the club was provide more opportunities for talented young Kiwis to play professionally here and overseas, this is a realisation of that, and we wish him all the best for the future.”
Phoenix joined Auckland FC from Auckland United at the start of 2025, shortly after making his New Zealand Under-20 debut. So far, he has played five times for the international side, scoring two goals.
“I’ve had a fantastic time with Auckland FC. The experience of playing in a professional environment has taught me a lot and I am extremely grateful for all the support and guidance the club has given me,” says Phoenix.
“I was incredibly proud to captain the reserves and for all we achieved in that first season. I’ve got great memories and made plenty of friends, but it has always been a dream of mine to play overseas. Seattle is going to be a bit different to Auckland, I’ll have to get used to the weather for start. It’s a life experience I can’t wait to get stuck into.”
Phoenix is expected to join up with his new teammates in the coming days.
