Auckland FC Strengthens Reserves with Key Staff Appointments

Auckland FC has bolstered its reserve team with the appointments of Brian Shelly and Peter Shaw to the coaching staff.

Shelly joins Auckland FC Reserves as Head of the Development Centre and Reserve Team Assistant Coach, while Peter Shaw comes in as Head of Athletic Development.

Auckland FC Director of Football, Terry McFlynn, said the appointments are vital in creating sustainable player pathways to ensure the best New Zealand talent has a chance to make it professionally.

“These appointments reflect Auckland FC’s commitment to working with our TDP partners, fostering local talent, and developing player pathways to the first team and beyond,” said McFlynn.

“Both Brian and Peter bring a wealth of experience when it comes to working with talented young players. Brian is also incredibly strong on the tactical side and has developed several innovative coaching programmes.”

Shelly is a UEFA A Licence holder and arrives after spending five years as Head of Football at Saint Kentigern College. As Head of the Development Centre, he will be responsible for leading and managing the development of young football talent within the club’s youth development system.

“Brian was a great professional who has successfully transitioned into coaching. He’ll be a fantastic mentor to the young players, working closely with Head Coach Steve Corica, Head Reserve Coach Luke Casserly, and the rest of the coaching team to create a strong unit with a shared footballing philosophy and playing style,” said McFlynn.

Peter Shaw has worked with some of the biggest names in rugby, including the Chiefs, the Hurricanes, and most recently Counties Manukau as the High Performance and Pathways Manager.

“Peter’s role will involve overseeing the physical development of players, ensuring they are equipped with the strength, conditioning, and injury prevention necessary to perform at their best.”

Auckland FC will play its first reserve team game against Fencibles United on Saturday, 22 March. For more on Reserve Team Head Coach Luke Casserly, click here.
