Ben Perez Baldoni Selected for OFC U16 Championship Team

Auckland FC is proud to confirm that Ben Perez Baldoni has been selected to represent New Zealand in August’s OFC U16 Championship.

Ben’s selection is a testament to his dedication, ability, and the foundational work of his junior clubs, who played a critical role in his early career.

The striker started out at Ellerslie AFC, whilst also playing for his school at Selwyn College. He recently joined Auckland FC Reserves to further develop his skills and mental understanding of the game.

“Auckland FC remains committed to recognising and celebrating the contribution of our partner clubs across the region,” says Doug Kors, Head of Player Recruitment at Auckland FC.

“While professional teams often receive the spotlight, it’s our local clubs and communities that help shape and develop these young players.”

Tim Adams is Chairman of Ellerslie AFC and has had a front-row seat to Ben’s development.

“Ben is a highly motivated individual, and we have loved working with him – providing a platform for him to show his talent and dedication to the game,” says Adams.

“He is a fine young man who we can’t wait to see continue to grow in the professional environment he has worked so hard to reach.”

Ben currently features for the Auckland FC Reserves, while several other players selected in the OFC U16 squad are currently involved in the club’s Talent Development Centre (TDC), a training programme that supplements the work of local clubs.

These players continue to train and play for their local clubs during the week and on weekends, while receiving additional development support from Auckland FC.

Other Development Centre players selected for the New Zealand U16 squad include:

  • Tomas Blackhall (Melville United)
  • Luke Carter (Western Springs)
  • Sean Kane (Eastern Suburbs)
  • Gethyn Foster (Cambridge FC)
  • Mati Nunez (Auckland United)
  • James Wenceslao (Auckland United)

As Auckland FC’s Director of Football, Terry McFlynn explains, “The Talent Development Programme (TDP) clubs across Auckland, Northland and the WAIBOP do a fantastic job in youth development, and our role is to support and enhance what they’re already doing.

“This hybrid model of development allows Auckland FC to power the next generation while keeping talent anchored in their communities.”

Placed in Group B, New Zealand U16s will play three matches in the week starting on August 18. These games will be played against Samoa, New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands.
