Australian-born defender Jake Girdwood-Reich has joined Auckland FC on loan. The move reunites Girdwood-Reich with Auckland FC head coach Steve Corica.
Corica was Sydney FC head coach when he gave the 21-year-old his A-League debut in the 22/23 season. The move provides Auckland FC with competition across the back line.
“When Corica calls, you answer,’ says the versatile centre-back. “Steve has supported me a lot during my career, giving me a chance and trusting me when I was still a teenager.
“Saying that, I realise at 21 I still have a lot to learn, so being back in the A-League and back with Steve at Auckland FC is a great place to do that.”
Girdwood-Reich played 45 times for Sydney FC, winning the Australia Cup in the process. At the end of the 23/24 season, he secured a move to St. Louis City. After 23 games with the club, he arrives at Auckland FC on a one-year loan.
“We have brough Jake in to play at centre-back, but he can also play as a number six or at right-back. He’s a good passer of the ball; quick, strong and will set a great example to the other young players,” says Corica.
“With Tommy’s departure, we needed cover at the back. Jake’s arrival will provide that and strengthen the team. I am looking forward to working with him again.”
Girdwood-Reich is the fifth signing through the door at Auckland FC this winter, following the arrivals of Oli Sail, Lachlan Brook and Sam Cosgrove. Goalkeeper Scott Morris arrived early in the transfer window but was forced to retire following advice from medical specialists.
With just over five weeks until Auckland FC kick off for the start of its second-ever A-League season, Corica is pleased with where the team is at and says it is unlikely the club will be making any more signings.
“Jake’s is the last signing we’ll make in this window. The team are looking strong, ready to compete and most importantly, ready to win,” added Corica.
Auckland FC will be out for revenge when they travel to Australia to face Melbourne Victory for the opening game of the season. Sunny Saturday’s then return to Go Media Stadium starting Saturday, October 25 at 5pm.
Single match tickets go on sale from Friday, September 17, but for better value get an Auckland FC season membership which offers 13 games for the price of 10.
