Bayliss brace powers Auckland FC to a 3-1 win over Melbourne City at Go Media Stadium.
This was a mature, clinical performance from the hosts. Melbourne City had the lion’s share of the ball, but Auckland FC were ruthless with the chances that came their way, pegged back just before the break only to retake control after the restart and finish the job late on. Michael Woud stood firm at the back, and Auckland turned long spells without the ball into three points at home.
- Lachlan Bayliss scored twice, the opener and the go-ahead goal after the break, to lead the way for Auckland FC.
- Lachlan Brook put the result beyond doubt late on, finishing from a Francis de Vries assist to make it 3-1.
- Michael Woud was kept busy, making a string of saves to keep Melbourne City at bay while Auckland had less of the ball.
- Efficiency won out over possession: Auckland scored three goals from four shots on target despite having just 41.7% of the ball.
FIRST HALF
Melbourne City carried most of the early play at Go Media Stadium, with Quinn MacNicol and Medin Memeti both firing off target before Jake Brimmer answered for the hosts, a right-footed effort from Hiroki Sakai’s cross that flew just a touch too high.
The temperature rose in the 32nd minute when Sam Cosgrove and Aziz Behich were both booked after a flashpoint. Moments later Michael Woud was called into action, getting down to keep out Andrew Nabbout’s shot from outside the box in the bottom left corner.
Auckland made their moment count. In the 35th minute Lachlan Bayliss struck a right-footed shot from outside the box into the top right corner, and the hosts led 1-0 against the run of play.

City responded before the break. In the 42nd minute MacNicol took Kavian Rahmani’s pass on the left side of the box and finished low into the bottom right corner to bring the sides level.
Auckland finished the half on the front foot, Bayliss dragging a right-footed effort from Cosgrove’s pass just wide in stoppage time. It ended 1-1 at the interval, with everything still to play for.
SECOND HALF
Michael Woud set the tone straight after the restart, holding Quinn MacNicol’s effort from the centre of the box, and Auckland FC were back in front eight minutes into the half. Lachlan Bayliss took the ball in the centre of the box and finished with his left foot into the middle of the goal for his second of the night, restoring the hosts’ lead at 2-1.
Melbourne City pushed for a reply, and Woud was needed again just before the hour, keeping out Andrew Nabbout’s strike from distance. Max Caputo replaced Nabbout in the 67th minute as the visitors looked for a spark.
Auckland held firm and stayed dangerous. Nando Pijnaker’s header forced a fine save from Macklin Freke in the 70th minute, and after Mathew Leckie and Lawrence Wong came on for City, Logan Rogerson lifted a good chance over the bar. Van Fitzharris came on for Bayliss in the 80th to bring fresh legs into the closing stages.
Then came the moment that settled it. Francis de Vries picked out Lachlan Brook in the 85th minute and he drove a right-footed finish from outside the box into the bottom right corner to make it 3-1.
Isa Prins and Daniel Normann came on in the 88th minute, when Rogerson was booked, and Callan Elliot replaced Sam Cosgrove at 90. Woud denied Medin Memeti’s header in stoppage time, Awer Mabil was booked, and the final whistle confirmed a 3-1 win at Go Media Stadium.
FULL TIME
Auckland FC showed they can beat a side that dominates the ball. Melbourne City finished with 58.3 per cent possession and 15 shots, yet the hosts turned four shots on target into three goals, with Michael Woud producing a string of saves to stop City’s territory becoming a scoreline. It is the first time Auckland have scored three in an A-League Men game since the 3-0 win over Adelaide United in May, and it makes it three league wins in a row.
The result also builds on a healthy record against City. Before this one, Auckland had won three, drawn two and lost one of their previous meetings, and the 3-1 scoreline adds another strong chapter while sending the club to the top of the ladder after the opening round. For a young club still writing its story, it is the kind of win that feeds momentum: a side that can ride out spells without the ball, hold firm and strike when it matters. Pedro Miguel de Barros Moreira’s group will take that belief on the road.
