Auckland FC fall 5-2 at CommBank Stadium after Vicelich opens the scoring. Auckland led through Vicelich from the 24th minute and held it until just before the break, but the hosts hit back with three goals in the space of seven minutes either side of the interval.
The visitors dug in to pull it back to 3-2, only for two late Wanderers goals to stretch the margin and hand us a first defeat in five meetings with Western Sydney. It’s not the night we wanted, but there was fight in this young side right to the end.
- Opener: Luka Vicelich put Auckland FC ahead in the 24th minute, with Francis de Vries the provider from a corner.
- Swing around the break: Brandon Borrello levelled in the 43rd minute before Liam Gillion (46′) and Nicolas Milanović (50′) made it 3-1 to the hosts.
- Fightback: A Borrello own goal in the 68th minute cut the deficit to 3-2 and gave the travelling support fresh hope.
- Late goals: Miguel Di Pizio (86′) and substitute Atiya Waraga (89′) sealed the 5-2 result for the Wanderers.
FIRST HALF
Auckland FC lined up in a 4-4-2 at CommBank Stadium, with Michael Woud in goal, a back four of Francis de Vries, Nando Pijnaker, Luka Vicelich and Hiroki Sakai, and Sam Cosgrove and Lachlan Bayliss up front. The hosts had more of the ball early, but Auckland defended with real discipline and Lachlan Brook went close with a header from a de Vries cross in the 15th minute.
A minute later de Vries tried his luck with a left-footed effort from outside the box, but Lawrence Thomas got down to his left to save. Auckland were the more threatening side in that spell, and the travelling support could sense something coming.
It arrived in the 24th minute. From a corner, de Vries whipped in a cross and Vicelich met it with a right-footed shot from the centre of the box, sending it into the high centre of the goal. Auckland FC led 1-0, and what a moment for the defender.
The hosts pushed back, with Dylan Scicluna testing the visitors from distance a few times without hitting the target, and Cosgrove had a header drift wide at the other end. Auckland held firm and went into the closing stages of the half still in front.
Just before the break, though, the Wanderers hit back. Jake Brimmer forced a save from Thomas in the 43rd minute, but the hosts broke at speed and Scicluna set up Brandon Borrello to finish from the right side of the box. The half ended 1-1.
SECOND HALF
The hosts needed barely a minute to turn the match around. Liam Gillion struck in the 46th minute, a left-footed finish into the bottom left corner, and after Woud had kept out Borrello, Nicolas Milanović made it 3-1 in the 50th minute. That quick double changed the night for the visitors.
Auckland did not fold. Logan Rogerson headed at Lawrence Thomas from a Hiroki Sakai cross, Lachlan Brook twice had efforts blocked, and Lachlan Bayliss dragged a shot wide from distance as the visitors pushed to get back into it. The Wanderers brought on Atiya Waraga in the 59th minute.
Then came the lifeline. In the 68th minute, Brandon Borrello turned the ball into his own net to make it 3-2, and the travelling support had every reason to believe again.
The hosts answered quickly, with Miguel Di Pizio hitting the bar from outside the box moments later. Pedro Miguel de Barros Moreira sent on fresh legs in the 71st minute, Daniel Normann and Van Fitzharris replacing Jake Brimmer and Lachlan Bayliss, but Auckland could not find the equaliser.
Late on, the gap widened. Di Pizio finished from Dylan Scicluna’s pass on the break in the 86th minute, and substitute Waraga added a fifth in the 89th, set up by Aydan Hammond on another counter. Three minutes of added time passed, and the final whistle confirmed a 5-2 defeat.
FULL TIME
A 5-2 defeat at CommBank Stadium is not the night Auckland FC wanted, and it ends the club’s unbeaten record against the Wanderers after three wins and a draw in the four previous meetings. The numbers tell an honest story: the hosts held 61.9% of the ball to Auckland’s 38.1% and had 14 shots to our 9, with six on target to our four. Auckland were chasing the game for long stretches, and the Wanderers made the most of it, finishing with real sharpness in front of goal. We tip our hat to the hosts for that.
There is still plenty to take from it. The opener showed what this side can do when it plays on the front foot, and the response to get back within a goal showed the resilience that has become part of this young club’s story. Auckland refused to drop their heads when the game could easily have run away from them, and that fight is something to build on. A young club still writing its story will have nights like this along the way, and the group will take the lessons, regroup quickly and get back to work.
