Pedro Moreira: The Portuguese Coach Ready to Write Auckland FC’s Next Chapter

New Auckland FC head coach Pedro Moreira has a clear vision for the AFC: attacking football, relentless hard work, and a united club determined to build on its early success. But for the Portuguese tactician, success starts with taking things one game at a time.

Pedro Moreira: The Portuguese Coach Ready to Write Auckland FC’s Next Chapter

By Jonno Ross

Taking charge of a football club where winning has quickly become an expectation is no small task. However, newly appointed Auckland FC head coach Pedro Moreira is embracing the challenge with enthusiasm, ambition, and a firm belief in his footballing philosophy.

The Portuguese coach arrives with his own ideas about how the game should be played, emphasising controlling possession, defensive organisation, and creating a team that supporters can be proud of.

Describing himself as an honest person who enjoys sharing his ideas, Moreira believes one of the most important aspects of coaching is convincing players to buy into a collective vision.

“I’m an honest person. I’m someone who likes to share my ideas with everyone and make them believe in what I really like about football.”

“That’s my main goal – to influence my players to agree and believe in my main idea as a coach.”

“I like to control the game when we have the ball and to be organised as much as possible in the moments that we don’t have the ball.”

It’s a philosophy that Auckland FC supporters will be eager to see in action as they prepare for their third A-League campaign.

Finding His Feet in Auckland

While Moreira has wasted little time getting to work on the training pitch, adjusting to life in New Zealand has brought its own challenges.

Having spent his first weeks living in a Takapuna hotel while searching for a house, Moreira admits that finally settling into a house has made a significant difference.

“I’m loving the city, the people, the kindness, and the way that people welcomed me is amazing.”

“I really missed the sun! It was a little bit cloudy during the first two months.”

“I only found a house two weeks ago. It was an important moment for me – being in a hotel away from the city was hard because I felt far away from everything.”

Now more settled, Moreira is enjoying both his new surroundings and the attitude of the players he has inherited.

“I’m loving working with the players, seeing their ambition and their belief that they are winners.”

“They all work hard in their daily work on the pitch and in the gym, so I’m really happy to be here.”

A Team Supporters Can Believe In

For Moreira, football is about much more than simply collecting three points.

He wants Auckland FC to develop an identity built around energy, quality, commitment, and a connection with the supporters in the stands.

“The main things are our energy and performance. I want the way we play to attract supporters to come in and fill the stadium.”

“I want the supporters to feel the energy on the pitch.”

Moreira believes his side’s willingness to compete in defensive situations will be just as important as its attacking creativity.

From winning individual duels and recovering possession to creating opportunities in front of goal, he wants his side to show a collective determination that reflects the pride of the club.

“There will be a lot of situations where we want to have the belief, trust, and pride of the club and the supporters in our work.”

His preparation has also involved studying the A-League and its opposition, while keeping a close eye on his players representing their countries.

“We have to study the stats in the championship so we can be better than the other teams.”

He also welcomed the opportunity to watch Auckland’s New Zealand internationals in action for the All Whites, gaining further insight into their abilities and the different roles they perform.

Pressure Is Part of the Job

Auckland FC’s early success has created considerable expectations, with supporters naturally hoping the club can continue challenging for silverware.

Moreira, however, is refusing to become distracted by long-term predictions or demands for immediate success.

“We must live with pressure. That’s our lives, and that’s football. We must play to win, and that’s our main goal.”

But with changes to the playing squad, including the arrival of younger players, Moreira believes it would be unfair to place the weight of an entire season’s expectations on their shoulders.

“There are a lot of people who are saying ‘we must win the title, we must be as successful as the previous seasons’. No. We must focus on our next game.”

It’s a message that reflects his belief in steady improvement rather than looking too far ahead.

“The work in football is week by week to better the team for the next game.”

Moreira is also quick to emphasise that success cannot be achieved by the players and coaching staff alone.

From the medical and sports departments to those responsible for nutrition and preparation, he believes every member of the club has an important role in helping Auckland FC achieve its ambitions.

Football Is More Than a Profession

Away from the touchline, Moreira describes himself as someone who enjoys a relatively ordinary life, despite the extraordinary demands of professional football.

Having moved homes more than ten times throughout his career in other countries, adapting to unfamiliar surroundings has become second nature.

“I’ve lived overseas a lot. I’ve changed my home over ten times, so it’s not new to me being somewhere else.”

He believes understanding the culture and society of each new country is an important part of settling into a new environment.

However, the demands of coaching can sometimes make having a balanced personal life difficult.

“Sometimes, as coaches, we lead a solitary life, but it’s the way we choose to live.

“We do it because we love football. It’s our life, and it’s our passion.”

A Message to the fans:

As Moreira prepares to lead Auckland FC into a new chapter, he has one simple request for the club’s passionate supporters: make yourselves heard.

With the fans positioned close to the action, he believes the atmosphere they generate can become an advantage for his side.

“Let’s play with 12 players.”

“If you are with us all the time, with high screams and loud noise, we can play with one more player; that’s very important.”

And while he is reluctant to make sweeping promises about titles or trophies, there is one commitment he promises to make.

“Because the supporters are so close to us, we will try to make you proud every time we step out on the pitch.”

For Moreira, the challenge is clear. Auckland FC has already established a winning mentality, and the Portuguese coach is determined to build on that foundation while introducing his own identity.

Whether his philosophy delivers the success supporters crave remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Moreira wants his side to be a team that plays with purpose, fights for every ball, and gives its supporters something to believe in.

A new coach, a new chapter, but the same ambition: to make Auckland FC a force to be reckoned with.
