Auckland FC opened their second ever A-League season with a goalless draw away to Melbourne Victory.
It’s a game that won’t live too long in the memory, but in time may look like a valuable point gained against opponents who have proved tricky in the past.
New recruits Lockie Brook, Sam Cosgrove and Jake Girdwood-Reich all started the game that was billed ahead of kick-off as a chance for redemption after last season’s semi-final loss at Go Media Stadium.
Jesse Randall had the best of the Black Knights chances and looked busy throughout. One he poked just wide after the ball came to him with his back to goal, the second was blocked by the legs of a Victory defender.
Auckland’s failure to find the net would have disappointed head coach Steve Corica, but he would have been pleased with what he saw at the other end of the pitch.
New signing Jake Girdwood-Reich game into the backline in place of the injured Nando Pijnaker. The young Australian looked composed and appears to be forming a good partnership with his compatriot, Dan Hall.
Behind the pair stood Michael Woud, making his A-League debut for Auckland FC. The ‘keeper pulled off a fine save when tested just before half-time and looked solid throughout. His kicking was also excellent and after the game was awarded the AFC Player of the Match.
Guillermo May, returning from knee surgery, was brought on in the second-half. Rogerson, Howieson and Gillion all got minutes as Auckland probed for an opening goal.
It wasn’t to be but next Saturday we go again. Auckland finally return home to Go Media Stadium for a 5pm kick-off against Western Sydney Wanderers.
