Auckland FC have closed the gap at the summit of the Isuzu UTE A-League to just one point after a dramatic 2–1 victory over Newcastle at McDonald Jones Stadium.
Jesse Randall and Sam Cosgrove proved a constant threat to the league leaders, combining to give Auckland an early advantage. Clayton Taylor briefly pulled the Jets level, but Cosgrove struck again in the second half to hand Newcastle their first defeat since Boxing Day.
The result tightens the race for the premiership, with Auckland now just a single point behind the Jets. Both sides will face the same five opponents across the run home as the battle for top spot intensifies.
Newcastle almost made a dream start when Taylor burst forward and delivered a dangerous cross that flashed across the goal, just evading the outstretched boots of Lachie Rose, while Eli Adams couldn’t turn it in at the back post.
Auckland quickly responded with chances of their own. Logan Rogerson tested James Delianov from distance with a powerful strike that required a full-stretch save, before Francis de Vries forced the goalkeeper into action again with a driven effort from a deep free-kick.
The breakthrough came after 15 minutes. Randall raced down the left flank and drilled a low cross into the area where Cosgrove was on hand to bundle the ball home, while Randall recorded his sixth assist of the season.
Newcastle hit back just before the half-hour mark with a well-worked set piece. Daniel Wilmering slipped the ball through for Taylor, who calmly opened his body and slid a precise finish past Michael Woud.
Auckland nearly restored their lead moments later when a flick-on from a long throw fell to Guillermo May, whose volley crashed against the crossbar.
The visitors carried that momentum into the second half. Randall created an early chance when he lifted a cross onto the head of Dan Hall, but the defender’s close-range effort sailed over the bar.
Another opportunity followed soon after as Randall once again broke down the left and squared for Cosgrove, who mis-hit his attempt before Rogerson’s follow-up was well saved by Delianov.
Auckland’s pressure finally paid off when Randall released the overlapping de Vries, whose pinpoint cross found Cosgrove unmarked in the box. The striker made no mistake, heading home his 10th goal of the season to move to the top of the A-League scoring charts.
The visitors almost added a third minutes later when Randall tried his luck from range, only to see his shot crash off the crossbar.
Newcastle pushed hard for an equaliser late in the match. Will Dobson’s cross was bravely flicked on by Jake Girdwood-Reich and narrowly missed the run of Rose, while Adams had the best chance with ten minutes remaining but sliced his volley wide inside the box.
Despite a late surge and waves of pressure from the Jets, Auckland stood firm to secure a crucial victory and bring the premiership race right back to life.
Player of the Match: Jake Girdwood-Reich
