Vanuatu United FC and Auckland FC played out a hard-fought 0–0 draw in their OFC Pro League clash at the National Stadium in Honiara, in what was their second meeting of the season.
Vanuatu United entered the match full of confidence after handing South Melbourne FC their first defeat of the campaign, while Auckland FC were looking to build momentum following a 1–0 win over Solomon Kings FC.
Auckland FC controlled much of the first half, dominating possession and creating the better opportunities. Aston Burns and James Bayliss looked dangerous down the left, while Vanuatu United relied on the pace of Alex Saniel on the counter to keep Auckland’s defence alert.
Vanuatu United set up in a disciplined low block early, limiting Auckland FC to half-chances despite their attacking width and pressing. At the other end, Auckland’s backline, led by Aidan Carey, dealt well with the hosts’ quick transitions.
Reid Drake came closest to breaking the deadlock before halftime, latching onto a delivery from the right, but his close-range effort was safely gathered by goalkeeper Matt Acton.
The tempo lifted after the break, with both sides pushing for an opener. Drake again threatened for Auckland FC, firing just wide.
As conditions took their toll, both sides turned to their benches for fresh legs. Tass Mourdoukoutas nearly made an immediate impact for Auckland FC, but his header from a set-piece was denied by Acton. Vanuatu United continued to look dangerous in attack, though they were unable to seriously test Oscar Mason.
Both teams finish Round 4 in Honiara with a win and a draw, and now shift their focus to Fiji for the next stage of the competition.
