Jerseys worn by players in Auckland FC’s first-ever match have been auctioned off, raising nearly $3,000 for the Starship Foundation.
The five player shirts went for a total of $2815, the most popular being the shirt worn by Auckland FC captain and former Japanese international, Hiroki Sakai.
The shirt is the same one Sakai wore when he forced a Brisbane Roar defender into conceding an own goal, and Auckland’s first ever, back in October.
At Starship Foundation to collect the shirt from Sakai after a winning bid of $1,500 was Dave Floyd, along with his son Jackson, 12, and his friend Josh, 13.
“I was there for that opening game. The stadium erupted when the goal went in. Auckland FC made history that day and to now have our captain’s shirt is an incredible memento,” says Floyd.
“It probably belongs in a museum to be honest, but for now we’re going to get it framed and hung up in my son’s bedroom.”
The shirt remains unwashed since it was worn a second time by Sakai in the club’s following game and second win against Sydney FC. Meaning as well has having a historical significance, it retains a signature scent.
“It would have been nice if it was washed and perhaps smelt a bit better,” said Sakai.
“But I understand the need for authenticity and I’m very happy for the donation that is being made to Starship.”
Sakai and Auckland FC went on to win their first six games and become the first New Zealand team to ever win A-League silverware.
Joanna Simon, Chief Executive of The Starship Foundation was there to meet with Hiroki and Dave and receive the donation.
“It has been great meeting Dave and Hiroki and hearing the story behind the shirt. We’re grateful to Auckland FC and all the people who bid on the various shirts that contributed to today’s donation,” said Simon.
“The funds raised from this auction will make a real difference to the lives of sick and injured children at Starship Hospital. The Starship Foundation plays a crucial role in supporting New Zealand’s only dedicated children’s hospital by funding vital medical equipment, innovative research, and family support programmes.”
“These contributions help ensure that Starship remains at the forefront of paediatric care, offering the best possible treatment and comfort to children and their families during some of the toughest times in their lives.”
Every dollar raised helps the Starship Foundation bring hope and healing to thousands of children across New Zealand.
