Auckland FC shine in Australia Cup debut with 4-0 win over Gold Coast Knights.
Auckland FC have stormed into the Round of 16 in their first-ever Australia Cup appearance, dismantling Queensland champions Gold Coast Knights 4-0 on Tuesday night.
It took just 30 seconds for the visitors to find the back of the net, with Jesse Randall heading home the ball to give the Black Knights an early lead. Logan Rogerson doubled the lead in the 19th minute, before Guillermo May made it 3-0 by halftime.
Despite being early in pre-season, Auckland looked sharp and composed throughout, dominating possession and carving out numerous chances. Liam Gillion capped off the performance with a stunning long-range strike in the second half – his first competitive goal for the club.
Gold Coast showed resistance after the break, testing Michael Woud on his debut and rattling the bar with a Max Brown free kick. But Auckland always looked in control, registering 26 shots to the Knights’ 8.
It was also a debut night for goalkeeper Michael Woud and young midfielder Ollie Middleton, both pulling on the Auckland FC shirt in competitive action for the first time. Woud kept a clean sheet with a confident display between the sticks, while Middleton impressed with his energy and composure in midfield.
Coach Steve Corica fielded a strong lineup, with key players like Gallegos, Howieson, May, and Rogerson all starting, while Brimmer, Gillion, and Callan Elliot added impact off the bench.
A statement win, and a promising start to what could be an exciting Cup run.
