Season one of the break-out sports docuseries Forever Auckland FC launched on Netflix yesterday, becoming the first New Zealand sports series to be acquired by the global streamer.
Originally produced for Sky New Zealand, the eight episode, all-access look at the Australian A-League debut season of New Zealand’s newest professional football team, follows their unprecedented rise to premier plate glory in their first year.
Executive producer, Dame Julie Christie, said the level of access given by the club and the A-League was unique and resulted in a series with great depth, as well as humour.
“We knew what we were capturing on film was special early on but could only have dreamed of getting the result the club achieved, making the series literally a fairytale story – though still a rollercoaster ride”. Â
Nick Becker, Auckland FC CEO praised the work of the production team.
“Right from the start we wanted to give Julie and her team genuine access to behind the scenes at Auckland FC.
“It is an excellent account of the highs and lows and sheer amount of hard work that goes into getting a professional sports team off the ground. We’re delighted more people and more fans across Australia and New Zealand will get the chance to enjoy it.”
A second series is currently in production, also for Sky New Zealand.
