Auckland FC to Honour Veterans

Auckland FC’s final home game of the season will see the club honour armed forces veterans.

Partnering with the Auckland Returned Services Association (RSA), the game against Central Coast Mariners on Sunday, April 19 will feature numerous initiatives to raise awareness and financial support for all veterans.

This will include poppy sellers fundraising ahead of ANZAC Day the following week, a warbird flyover at half time and a remembrance ceremony ahead of the 3pm kick-off.

The ceremony will include the singing of the national anthem in both Te Reo and English, the reading of the Ode of Remembrance and a moment of silence.

The Auckland FC player shirts will also feature the poppy printed on the centre of the shirt. After the game these shirts will be signed by the players and auctioned off, raising additional funds for veterans.

The shirts will be listed on trademe in the days following the game, giving fans a chance to own a very special and unique piece of history.

Nick Becker, Auckland FC CEO, said the club was happy to recognise veterans as part of its community commitment.

“With ANZAC Day just around the corner, this presented a great opportunity for the club and our fans to honour veterans and recognise the sacrifices made by so many Kiwi families,” says Becker.

“In a time of heightened tension around the world, it also helps remind us of the grim realities of war and conflict, wherever it is taking place.”

The club has also donated 200 tickets to the Auckland RSA for distribution amongst members. To donate to Auckland RSA to support the welfare or veterans and ex-service personnel and their families, click here.
