Auckland Make History as OFC Pro League Champions

Auckland FC have been crowned champions of the inaugural OFC Pro League, and with it securing their place at the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

As OFC Pro League champions, Auckland FC earn automatic qualification for the Intercontinental Cup, the annual knockout tournament in which the reigning champions of FIFA’s six continental confederations compete from September to December.

This was confirmed before the final took place on Sunday. Finalists South Melbourne FC, affiliated with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) rather than the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), were ruled ineligible to represent Oceania at the continental tournament. The ruling handed Auckland FC their Intercontinental Cup spot ahead of Sunday’s decider, and the club will now face AFC champions Al Ahli, with venue and date to be confirmed.

The path to the final was built on one of the most convincing regular-season campaigns. Auckland dominated the eight-team field, recording 10 wins, two draws and two defeats across 14 games to finish as runaway leaders.

But the ambitions of Auckland FC stretch well beyond this season. The OFC Pro League uses a separate, cumulative pathway to determine its Club World Cup representative. The best-performing team across the first three seasons of the competition will earn Oceania’s berth at the lucrative FIFA Club World Cup in 2029.

Auckland FC have placed themselves firmly at the front of that race with two more seasons still to play.

As well as crowning Auckland FC the inaugural OFC Pro League champions, two Auckland FC individuals snapped up awards following the conclusion of Sunday’s final at Eden Park.

OFC PLAYER AWARDS

Golden Ball | Daniel Normann

Auckland FC midfielder Daniel Normann was presented with the Golden Ball Award for the best player of the inaugural OFC Pro League season. Normann started in all 19 of Auckland FC’s matches throughout the campaign, anchoring Auckland’s midfield with authority and control.

Golden Glove | Oscar Mason

Auckland FC goalkeeper Oscar Mason was also awarded the Golden Glove for the best goalkeeper of the tournament. Mason showed experience above his years throughout the campaign, and kept eight clean sheets – the most of any other goalkeeper in the league. He also played a key role in organising a backline that kept the best defensive record in the competition.

Fair Player Award | Auckland FC

Auckland were also awarded the Fair Play Award for the best disciplinary record of the season.

The OFC Pro League team, like the A-League team, will now enjoy a well-deserved break.
