Auckland FC are the OFC Pro League Champions.
The hosts defeated South Melbourne FC 2-1 in a historic final at Eden Park on Sunday, becoming the first club to lift the trophy in Oceania’s inaugural professional football competition.
The ledger was even heading into the decider, both sides had won once and drawn once across their three previous meetings, but with an A-League Championship already secured by their sister squad the night before, Auckland arrived at Eden Park riding a wave of momentum.
They made it count early. A bright opening saw Jonty Bidois muscle past Jacob Eliopoulos before teeing up Zac Zoricich, whose right-footed effort drifted wide of the bottom corner.
The breakthrough came soon after, when South Melbourne failed to deal with a corner in the 23rd minute and Daniel Normann lifted a composed finish beyond the outstretched hand of Javier Diaz Lopez, the first goal ever scored in an OFC Pro League final.
The celebrations had barely died down when Isa Prins squandered a golden opportunity to double the lead, lifting the ball inches over the crossbar from point-blank range inside the penalty area.
South Melbourne struggled to respond. The attacking fluency that had produced 54 goals across their previous 18 matches was nowhere to be found, with a deflected effort from Lampard and a speculative overhead attempt from Swibel their most threatening moments of the first half. Coach Sinisa Cohadzic cut an increasingly agitated figure on the touchline, and his mood darkened further when Alex Menelaou was stretchered off before the break.
Auckland had not dropped a result from a winning position all season, and they came out after the interval with intent. Bidois continued to cause problems up front, forcing a one-on-one save from Diaz Lopez before dragging another effort narrowly wide. With the game still there to be won, coach Luke Casserly turned to his bench, just as he had in the semi-final four days earlier, introducing Aston Burns and Matt Ellis to inject fresh energy into the attack.
The move paid immediate dividends. In the 72nd minute, Burns slid a pass into the path of Ellis, who burst into the box and nutmegged Diaz Lopez to all but end the contest.
South Melbourne grabbed a late consolation deep into stoppage time, Arran Cocks picking out Yuki Uchida to head in at the back post, but there was no dramatic comeback. Auckland held firm, the full-time whistle confirming their place in history as the first-ever OFC Pro League champions.
