Local legend Emiliano ‘Emi’ Tade announces his retirement aged 38, having played nearly 300 games in New Zealand.
Tade arrived in New Zealand in 2010, joining Wellington United, but later found his way to Auckland City, where he became a club legend.
The Argentine achieved it all at Auckland City, playing at 9 FIFA Club World Cups, winning 7 OFC Champions League titles and becoming the club’s record goal scorer and second highest appearance maker along the way.
Impressive stints at Auckland United, Western Springs and OFC Pro League glory at Auckland FC firmly justify Tade’s spot among footballing royalty in Auckland.
“Auckland has been a big part of my footballing career. I feel at home, and I’ve had such great memories here.”
Tade joined Auckland FC’s OFC Pro League set up this past season as a player-coach and will continue his coaching journey at the club.
“I just love being around football, coaching the younger players the past few years here and at my former clubs, is something I’ve really enjoyed”.
“I’m sure I’ll still get the itch to play from the sidelines, but now is the right time for me to hang up the boots,” said Tade.
Auckland FC’s Director of Football, Terry McFlynn, couldn’t speak higher of Tade and his impact on the club’s success in the OFC.
“Not only was he a great player, but he is someone the younger lads in the squad could look up to. A real leader on the pitch and on the sidelines”.
“He was such a big part in helping us achieve our goals in the OFC, and we’re thrilled that he’ll be with us next season.”
Auckland FC would like to thank Tade for his incredible contributions as a player over the years, and we look forward to many more years coming with him as part of our coaching staff.
