Auckland FC announces the departure of winger Liam Gillion after two memorable seasons with the club.
Liam joined the club from Auckland City FC as one of the club’s inaugural scholarship signings in 2024. Right away, he established himself as a cult hero and as one of the club’s most eye-catching players.
With his contract up, Gillion has decided to pursue opportunities elsewhere.
The Auckland local appeared 39 times for the club in the A-League, Australia Cup and OFC Pro League, scoring six goals and registering two assists.
Five of those goals were with Auckland FC’s inaugural OFC Pro League title-winning team. He will be best remembered for a stunning full-field solo goal against South Melbourne, earning him the club’s OFC goal of the season award.
His exciting performances in the club’s debut campaign earned him his first full All Whites call-up, making his debut in November 2024 against Vanuatu.
“I feel so proud to have been able to represent my city at a professional level, and it’s been so special being part of the club’s journey right from the beginning”, says Gillion.
“Thank you to everyone who’s supported my journey at the club, the coaches, my teammates and everyone behind the scenes for believing in me.
“Most importantly, thank you to the fans. The support I’ve felt from the fans has been unreal. Hearing the chants from the Port is something I’ll never forget.
“My time at the club has meant a lot to me; it makes saying goodbye that much harder.”
Auckland FC Director of Football, Terry McFlynn, wishes the winger well for whatever comes next in his young career.
“His two seasons at the club have not always been easy, but he’s always kept his head down and kept working hard. He’s a great professional, and I can’t wait to see what he gets up to next. I’ll definitely keep a close eye on his career,” says McFlynn.
Everyone at the club wishes Liam well for the next chapter in his career, and he’ll always be welcome back at the Black Knights.
